The Friends were established in 2011 by a number of local residents who were concerned that the now mature park would gradually decline through general neglect.
The group that they established is an informal one, with no formal membership, or fees, but simply a commitment to work towards the improvement of the park. The group work towards the maintenance and enhancement of the park, and to encourage as wide a range of local people to come into the park and enjoy what it offers.
To this end the group meet regularly each month to do a full litter pick. They also contribute to the purchase of new plants and trees in the park, and, when possible, help in the planting. In addition, events are held in the park. Some of these, like the afternoon teas, and the Christmas Carol Concert, are held by the Friends themselves. Other events are held in association with the Friends, but arranged by other organisations, such as the RSPB birdwatch for local schools, held in January, and the concert held by The King Edward Music Society (KEMS) in June.
